Earthquake in Chile: Earth’s axis is moved
Scientists say that Chilean disaster has caused day reduction
In brief: The researcher Richard Gross has noted that the earthquake in Chile caused redistribution of Earth's mass that in result moved Earth’s axis to 8 cm.Scientists from JPL say that Chilean earthquake has caused day reduction to 1.26 microseconds due to the shift of Earth’s axis. This disaster can be compared with such on Sumatra in 2004.
The researcher Richard Gross has noted that the earthquake in Chile caused redistribution of Earth’s mass that in result moved Earth’s axis to 8 cm. Such disaster had already occurred in 2004 on Sumatra Island. That time Earth axis were moved to 7 cm. That earthquake was more powerful but Chilean break has larger angle in Earth’s crust.
