Volcano in Guatemala has woken up

In brief: Now the cloud of volcanic ash is 8.3 km high and has already spread over six departments of the country.

The volcano Santiagito of 2.5 km high in Guatemala began to erupt yesterday. Ash and sand is being thrown out to the atmosphere and the wind is bringing them to Northern East. The eruption is considered by specialist as incredible and powerful.

Now the cloud of volcanic ash is 8.3 km high and has already spread over six departments of the country. The authorities have prohibited the flights in 15 km around the volcano. In three departments schools are closed and children are evacuated. The volcano is situated 206 km far West from the capital of the country – the city of Guatemala. The last eruption of Santiagito was in 1929 when it caused 2500 human deaths.
