Kazakh pilots arrested in Bangkok are to stand trial

In brief: Kazakh pilots are indicted of giving false information about the cargo and illegal transportation of weapons.

Astana expects that Thai justice will be fair to the Kazakhstan’s crew of the plane IL-76 arrested in the airport of Bangkok. The information about the arrest of the plane was published on December, 12, 2009.

IL-76 was arrested in Bangkok where it had arrived for refueling on the way to Pyongyang. The plane was full of military equipment on the board. The authorities of Thailand reported that IL-76 carried military equipment prohibited to the exportation from Korea according to the decision of the UN Security Council. On the board of the arrested plane portable missiles, spare parts for missiles and electronic control systems of uncovered weapons were detected.

The crew of the plane, 4 citizens of Kazakhstan and 1 Belarus, is now under investigation. They are indicted of giving false information about the cargo and illegal transportation of weapons. The pilots ensure they have not known anything about such cargo on their plane. The hearing on the case is scheduled on Wednesday, January, 6. Kazakh Ministry of foreign affairs is going to hold negotiations with Thai authorities on liberation of Kazakh pilots.
