In brief: The scientists suppose that jellyfishes are immortal creatures.When everything alive on the Earth will die out, when the last human will extinct and the last animal will go into oblivion, the only one creature will remain alive. It will live on our planet and maybe some day will meet aliens. The scientists have discovered the special kind of jellyfishes – jellyfishes-highlanders. They are immortal jellyfishes able to rejuvenate themselves.
The unique organisms which are supposed to rule the Earth in future are scientifically named hydroid Turritopsis nutricula. Yet in XIX century the scientists supposed that hydras are immortal and already in 1990th it was proven by experiment that they don’t die due to aging. Contemporary genetic engineers are interesting in biologic mechanisms which let jellyfishes stay eternally young.
Turritopsis nutricula is a jellyfish of 4-5 mm diameter. It is the only animal on the planet able to rejuvenate itself. Actually Turritopsis can return to the stage of polypus and grow again. This cycle can be repeated infinitely. This kind of jellyfishes inhabits in warm tropical waters, but scientists suppose that it can be found also in other regions.
