Russia – Japan: confrontation of superpowers

Japan admitted illegal Russian possession of Kuriles

In brief: South Kuriles were occupied by soviet army at the time of World War II. Nowadays they are still in Russian possession. Japan considers this fact illegal and has asked Russian government to review the situation

On November, 20, Japan made a decision to admit Russian possession of South Kuriles illegal.

Four isles Yutrup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Khabomai belonged to Japan were occupied by soviet army at the end of World War II. This is the reason for Russia to consider it its territory.

According to the declaration concluded between the USSR and Japan in 1956 the USSR was obliged to return South Kuriles to Japan after concluding peace treaty.

But Russia and Japan have not succeeded in reaching such agreements. Russia according to its government’s statements is ready to conclude a peace treaty while Japanese authorities avoid any confrontation with Russia. The fact is that South Kuriles are still being kept in indefinite position.

But Japanese government’s patience is going to fade. It is now impossible for Russian people from Sakhalin to obtain Japanese visa.

How long will this silent confrontation last?
