Iran releases five British sailors

Five sailors have been considered innocent and now can return home

In brief: Families of five British sailors are glad to hear their children have been released by Iran

Five sailors held hostage in Iran were released. After their yacht “Kingdom of Bahrain” accidentally entered Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on the way to the race, young men were arrested and had been holding imprisoned for a week. The government also warned that if yachtsmen were found in “evil intentions”, they would be put on trial.

The statement from the Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said: “After getting necessary guarantees, Iran released the five. We reached the conclusion that they entered Iran’s territorial waters by mistake.”

The sailors are now being towed back into international waters along with their yacht. Apparently they are heading to Dubai.

Father of one of the yachtsmen, David Young, has said he is “very relieved”. If Iran officials hadn’t found the sailors innocent, they could have been held captive until next year.
