Russia and the US: the future of the new arms treaty is decided
The START I will be replaced by new agreement
In brief: Russia and the US are about to sign a new nuclear treaty.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said on Wednesday that the question about the nuclear deal is easy and it will be signed soon though he didn’t state any concrete date.
Signed in 1991, the START I forced each country to reduce the number of its warheads by at least a quarter. It also settled an extensive network and system of verification procedures, assuring each side that the other follows the rules of the pact.
It is possible that the treaty could be signed at the backstage of Copenhagen international climate summit.
